Fans Are Not Allowed to Add “44” to German Football Team Jerseys, According to Adidas

Adidas has prohibited football fans from adding their own numbers to German national shirts because they are thought to resemble the insignia worn by Nazi SS units during World War II.

The industrialized extermination of Jews throughout Europe was carried out by Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich’s paramilitary group, the Schutzstaffel (SS).

Historian Michael König first voiced concerns about the jerseys, calling the design of the outfit “very questionable.”

The German away uniform’s pink hue also sparked debate. Some who are in favor of it argue that it showcases Germany’s diversity, while others think it is unconventional and just an attempt to make money for the German Football Association (DFB).

Oliver Brüggen, an Adidas representative, refuted claims that the uniform intentionally bore similarities to Nazi symbols.

“As an organization, we are dedicated to combating prejudice, bigotry, violence, and bigotry in all its manifestations,” he declared. “We shall forbid the jerseys from being personalized.”

Since its creation in 1929, the SS rune has come to represent some of the worst atrocities carried out by the Nazi regime.

The SS was in charge of overseeing extermination camps like Auschwitz, where over a million people were killed, as well as guarding concentration camps and questioning suspected traitors.

This international football uniform controversy dates back to two separate occasions in recent weeks. Modifications to the St. George’s cross on the back of the team’s shirt collar drew criticism from English supporters.

Nike defended their choice of purple and navy in addition to the classic red to signify inclusivity, but detractors called it “virtue signaling” and rude. Politicians who advocated for its repeal included Labour leader Keir Starmer.

The European Football Championship this year will be held in Germany, with games being played in ten different cities. When the hosts play Scotland on June 14, the tournament will begin.
