It was an emotionally intense evening at the Theater of Dreams as Manchester United hosted Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final clash. Earlier in the season the Red Devils had clinched a 2:1 win against the Lords of Anfield.
A win in this match was needed for United to dream of a place in Champions League football next season as it’s unlikely they’d secure a spot on the league table.
United drew the first blood in the second half as Alejandro Garnacho’s shot was parried by Liverpool’s goalie only to set up a tap-in for McTominay who killed it.
Liverpool was out to look for a consolation to bring their relationship with Jürgen Klopp to a blissful end as he had earlier announced in January that he’d take a step back from the managerial position in Anfield at the wrap of the season.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t going to happen.
Mac Allister struck for Liverpool in the 44th minute immediately followed by Salah’s tap-in at the stroke of halftime as Onana parried the initial shot.
Anthony in his usual majesty pulled back an equalizer to give United hope as the match time rallied towards a nervous final 90 minutes. Elliot made it three for the Reds with Rashford stamping an equalizer again in the 112th minute.
And there the savior was an earlier substitute. United regained possession and Garnacho skillfully passed to Amad Diallo who clinically put the ball in the back of the net with a low finish to cup only his second goal for the Red Devils.
