With 12 games remaining, Bernardo Silva calls Manchester City’s quest to win a historic second straight treble and establish themselves as arguably the greatest club team of all time “an inspiration.”
The Champions League quarterfinal second leg between City and Real Madrid takes place on Wednesday.
Following last week’s match at the Bernabéu, the tie is currently tied at 3-3. With six games remaining in the season, City leads Arsenal and Liverpool by two points in the Premier League.
Their FA Cup semi-final matchup is against Chelsea on Saturday at Wembley.
Silva was asked if they would be motivated by the possibility of winning two trebles in a row and going on to become the greatest team in history.
“Obviously, it serves as inspiration and motivation,” the midfield player remarked.
“We are aware of this team’s exceptional performance, and we aim to build on it by winning the Premier League six times in seven years and four times in a row. And we want to win the Champions League so that we can tie Madrid’s record of three straight titles; no one else has ever won four Premier League titles in a row.
And if we win two trebles in a row, that would be a legacy, he continued, “but we are fighting for it even though we could lose all the competitions in a week.”
In the first leg of the semi-final from last season, City drew 1-1 in Madrid before Silva’s two goals put them on track to a 4-0 victory at the Etihad in the return match, which Guardiola called the best performance of his career given that the opposition were the competition’s record 14-time winners.
