Which Nations Face the Possibility of Earthquakes?

These nations have experienced earthquakes frequently, even though they can occur anywhere in the world.

The country’s strongest earthquake in more than 20 years, with a magnitude of 7.4 that struck coastal Taiwan in the early hours of April 3, 2024, left nine people dead, hundreds injured, and about 70 miners trapped. Like other East Asian nations, Taiwan is frequently rocked by earthquakes.

Earthquakes frequently cause deadly damage to those countries and other regions situated on fault lines around the world, resulting in both monetary losses and lost lives. 61,521 deaths were attributed to earthquakes in 2023, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

3 nations most vulnerable to earthquakes

Turkey

Over 50,000 individuals lost their lives when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023. Seismic activity has historically been intense in Turkey. In 2020, the country experienced two significant earthquakes that claimed over 45 lives in the far eastern and western regions.

Experts state that earthquakes can be especially deadly in Turkey because the nation is home to many ancient, probably unreinforced structures and is bordered by two fault lines.

Iran

According to the Tehran Times, Iran experienced a disproportionately high number of earthquakes—more than 600 in January 2023 alone—much like its northern neighbor Turkey.

In late January, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Khoy in northwest Pakistan, resulting in at least three fatalities and 816 injuries, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Pakistan

Due to the numerous geological fault lines that crisscross the nation, Pakistan is especially susceptible to seismic activity, especially when it comes to more severe forms.

The country’s dense population adds to the complexity of this situation by raising the potential for earthquake destruction, according to scientists.

Over 800 people were killed in 2013 by two earthquakes that struck the province of Balochistan, and over 70,000 people perished in 2005 from a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Kashmir region.
